Independent guide · Pro edition + Toerversie

Train for
the chaos.

A practical 12–16 week framework for South Limburg’s short, sharp, repeated demands. Adapt it to your event and starting point.

Important: Editorial guidance only—not official Amstel Gold Race advice or medical advice. Adapt for fitness, health, terrain, weather and event rules; consult a qualified coach or medical professional.
01 / The demand

Thirty-plus ways
to spend a match.

The pro course varies by year; the official 2026 men’s route listed 257 km and 33 climbs. Toerversie routes vary too. Expect rolling, sometimes chaotic roads, short punchy hills, incomplete recovery and muscular fatigue—rather than one steady mountain effort.

1–3 minutesSteep efforts may briefly reach roughly 120–150% FTP for trained riders. That is a training heuristic, not a universal prescription.
Recover while racingDescents and false flats help, but the next climb can arrive before full recovery.
Torque under fatigueThe Cauberg and steep cobbled Keutenberg reward controlled force late in the day.
02 / The build

A flexible progression

Four blocks.
One target.

Weeks 1–6

Base

Zone 2 and progressive 5–6 hour rolling endurance. Add low-cadence tempo/sweet spot and core/leg strength: squats, lunges and single-leg RDLs. Use safe technique and manageable loads.

Weeks 7–12

Build

Try 10–15 × 1–3 min hard reps with 3–5 min active recovery. Examples: 4 × 8 min VO₂-style work, or 6 × 2 min hard / 5 min easy. Add occasional back-to-back fatigue days with recovery planned.

Weeks 13–16

Sharpen + taper

Use hilly race simulations and practice nutrition. Reduce volume 30–50% across the final 2–3 weeks while retaining short openers. Arrive fresh.

03 / Example

Sample week—adjust, don’t copy blindly
DaySession
MonRest and mobility
Tue6 × 2 min at about 125% FTP with recovery
Wed90–120 min Zone 2 + core/strength
ThuSweet spot/tempo totaling 45–60 min
FriRecovery or rest
Sat4–6+ hour hilly endurance with effort spikes
Sun2–3 hour moderate endurance and fueling practice
04 / Ride smart

Save legs.
Feed the engine.

Gearing examplesCompact 50/34 and a wide 30/32 cassette can suit steep ramps, but gearing is personal—not mandatory.
Train your gutPractice 60–90 g carbohydrate/hour on long or hard rides if tolerated. Build gradually and seek sports-nutrition guidance.
Race the dayDon’t chase early; protect matches on flats and eat early.
